Morning

We open the doors at six and sweep the floor before anything else.

The bench is cold, the glue is stiff, and nothing that gets forced now holds later in the week.

Afternoon

The room fills with the smell of hot hide glue and nobody talks much.

Four benches, four jobs, one clock. Whatever is clamped by five stays clamped until the morning.

Night

The last light stays on over the drying rack, and that is the whole night shift.

Wood moves while the building cools. What we find in the morning is what the week is actually about.
